US Port of Mobile Suspends Vessel Traffic as Storm Approaches
The Alabama Port Authority suspended vessel and terminal operations at the Port of Mobile, and the Coast Guard set Port Condition Zulu, with gale-force winds expected within 12 hours.

The Alabama Port Authority has suspended vessel and terminal operations at the public docks in the Port of Mobile, as the U.S. Coast Guard set "Port Condition Zulu" due to the approaching storm.
The authority stated that gale-force winds are expected to hit the area within 12 hours, prompting a complete shutdown of port activity.
It explained that operations will not resume until post-storm inspections are completed and permission is granted by the Coast Guard, with no set timetable for resuming work.
The port closure is part of a series of precautionary measures in the Gulf of Mexico to face Hurricane Isaias, while shipping companies await the resumption of traffic after the storm passes and damage is assessed. The Gulf is one of the world's busiest regions for oil tanker traffic and production platforms, making any port closure there have a direct impact on shipping traffic.
What Do These Terms Mean?
"Port Condition Zulu": The highest alert level in U.S. ports, set when gale-force winds are expected within 12 hours.
U.S. Coast Guard: The agency responsible for the security of waterways and ports, determining closures and reopenings.
Public Docks: Berthing and loading locations managed by the port authority and used by multiple shipping companies.
Gale-Force Winds: Winds usually ranging between 48 and 63 knots, which hinder crane operations and navigation within the port.
