South Korea Completes First Commercial Container Voyage via the Arctic to Europe

The Korean container ship 'PanStar Acro,' operated by PanStar, completed its first commercial round-trip voyage between South Korea and Europe via the Arctic, returning to Busan 50 days after departing on August 22, as reported by gCaptain citing Reuters.

The vessel made calls at the European ports of Felixstowe, Rotterdam, and Gdansk during its voyage.

PanStar sought to transport around 1,300 TEUs, but the ship sailed carrying 737 TEUs of cargo in addition to empty containers, reflecting weak demand for the new route.

Officials say the Arctic route could reduce standard voyage times by about a third, while experts warn that the costs of ice delays, special insurance premiums, and extra fuel could erode the time advantage.
