Egypt Postpones Vote on Military Support for Saudi Arabia to October 26

The Egyptian House of Representatives postponed until October 26 a vote on allowing the armed forces to support Saudi Arabia if requested, extending the debate over a deeper Egyptian role in the conflict with the Houthis in Yemen, according to Reuters.

The Iran-backed Houthis announced attacks on Saudi targets in the energy sectors, airports, and military sites on Monday, stating they targeted an Aramco facility in Yanbu, the Shaybah field, and the airports of Riyadh and Abha. Saudi authorities did not immediately confirm these claims, and Reuters could not independently verify them.

Saudi air travel is suffering from significant disruption, as more than 45% of flights departing from the Kingdom's airports have been canceled since October 8, according to aviation data analytics company Cirium. Saudi Arabia also postponed its primary investment conference to next year on Monday.

What do these terms mean?

House of Representatives: The elected legislative chamber that passes laws and approves major decisions such as military participation.

The Houthis: An armed group controlling parts of Yemen and engaged in a conflict with a Saudi-led coalition.

Unconfirmed claims: An announcement of responsibility for an event whose authenticity has not yet been verified by independent parties.
