A session at the Annual Global Precious Metals Conference organized by the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) discussed why gold remains resilient at a time when global bond yields continue to rise, considering this a departure from the usual inverse relationship between the metal and yields.

Participant Dhawan said that "gold is sending us a message that global debt may be reaching a tipping point," noting that physical demand and jewelry orders have dropped sharply at higher prices, which could keep short-term trading volatile.

For his part, McGuire believed that bond market pressures will ultimately attract gold to the portfolios of major US institutions, stating that the metal is "not yet part of the discussion among the world's largest institutions."

The standard correlation between gold and bond yields is one of the most prominent indicators tracked by traders, as a higher yield reduces the relative attractiveness of the non-yielding metal, making its current resilience a subject of debate at the conference.

What do these terms mean?

Bond Yield: The annual percentage return earned by a bondholder, against which investors typically compare the return on non-yielding assets such as gold.

Safe Haven: An asset sought by investors to preserve value during market turmoil.

Physical Demand: Demand for the metal for manufacturing and jewelry purposes, as opposed to investment demand.

Tipping Point: The level at which the direction of an economic phenomenon changes significantly after an accumulation of pressure.
