SpaceX Buys Grain's Spectrum for $8 Billion for Direct-to-Cell Service

Grain Management announced a definitive agreement to sell its complete nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio to SpaceX, covering up to 14 MHz of paired spectrum, subject to approval by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.

The parties did not disclose the value of the deal, while The Wall Street Journal reported, citing informed sources, that it is worth approximately $8 billion in cash.

SpaceX says the low-band spectrum supports the next generation of direct satellite-to-phone connectivity service under "Starlink Mobile," a service through which the company seeks to connect standard phones directly to satellites without an intermediary ground station.

The agreement comes in a U.S. market where major operators such as "T-Mobile", "Verizon", and "AT&T" compete, as radio spectrum is considered the rarest input in telecom services. This development is of interest to investors in space and telecom sector equities, as FCC approval is the final gateway to completing the deal.

What do these terms mean?

Low-band spectrum (800 MHz): A range of radio waves that covers wide distances and easily penetrates inside buildings, typically used for coverage in remote areas.

Direct satellite-to-phone connectivity: Technology that connects a standard phone directly to satellites, without the need for a cell tower or intermediary ground station.

Paired spectrum: Spectrum allocated in a pair of bands, one for transmitting from the network and the other for receiving from it, allowing two-way data exchange.

Federal Communications Commission: The U.S. regulatory agency that licenses spectrum usage and approves license transfers between companies.
