The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced that it received a report from a third party regarding a tanker being struck by an unknown object and catching fire while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. It clarified that the crew members are safe according to the report, while the damage and environmental impact remain unknown so far. Iran's Fars News Agency stated that a supertanker capable of carrying 2.5 million barrels of oil was transiting the Strait of Hormuz via an 'unauthorized route' to the south, and was hit 8 kilometers off the coast of Oman.
In the same context, Iran's Fars News Agency quoted the 'Arabian Gulf Strait Authority' as saying that several tankers had been hit in recent days, with the last three being owned or chartered by entities in the UAE. This comes after a previous incident affecting three Liberia-flagged tankers while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, according to the shipping intelligence service 'Marisks', with their automatic transponders turned off during transit.
The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the world's most critical transit passages, with a significant portion of oil and gas exports from Gulf countries passing through it to global markets, making it a sensitive point for energy security and international trade. No party has claimed responsibility for the incident so far, nor has any official comment been issued clarifying its circumstances or identifying the party that launched the unknown object.
The repetition of such incidents in one of the world's most sensitive maritime passages heightens uncertainty among shipping companies and tanker owners, who are closely watching its impact on the pace of vessel transit through the strait, as well as on freight and insurance rates. The extent of the environmental impact resulting from the fire remains unknown until an official assessment is released, while markets monitor developments in the situation and navigation companies' steps in the region.
