Suez Canal Traffic Gradually Recovers as Container Ships Return to the Red Sea

Data from Xeneta and other industry sources revealed that an increasing number of major shipping companies are executing voyages through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea as part of phased plans to test safety levels before fully resuming services.

Several companies announced the launch of "full service loops" via Suez after months of rerouting around the Cape of Good Hope, which will add new capacity and reduce transit times between Asia and Europe by about two weeks.

Reports from Metro Global warn that security risks in the Red Sea persist despite a decline in the intensity of attacks, emphasizing that the return of shipping companies is a calculated gamble on a fragile stability, rather than an announcement of the crisis's end.

The commercial equation remains pressing: the cost of adding two weeks to each voyage around the Cape of Good Hope now exceeds the required risk premium for passing through Suez in the eyes of a growing number of operators. Analysts believe the landscape will remain volatile for months, and that individual decisions to return will dictate the pace of market recovery more than any official declaration that the crisis is over.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Full Service Loop: A periodic shipping route covering all planned stops without shortcuts — its return means the company has resumed its line normally.

Cape of Good Hope: The alternative route around South Africa that ships used to avoid the Red Sea, adding 10-14 days to the voyage.

War Risk Premium: Additional fees paid by cargo owners or vessel operators to cover the risks of military operations in hotspot areas.
