The EGX 30 index closed down 0.77% at 51,894 points, pressured by declines in blue-chip stocks led by Commercial International Bank (CIB), alongside Taleat Moustafa Group (TMG), Telecom Egypt, and Eastern Company. EGYIN website reported that the decline was caused by foreign selling pressure. The drop was driven by leading stocks that carry the largest weight in the index.
In contrast, the equal-weighted EGX 70 index rose 1.11% to reach 18,625 points, reflecting a movement in small and medium-cap stocks in the opposite direction of blue chips. This divergence indicates that selling pressure was concentrated in major companies, while smaller stocks moved in a different direction. The EGX 70 index serves as a benchmark for investors who prefer smaller-sized and less liquid stocks.
Trading value reached EGP 8.8 billion, and market capitalization lost around EGP 20 billion during the session. Traders compare the trading value to its usual levels to determine whether market liquidity is higher or lower than normal, which determines the strength of any price movement in upcoming sessions.
This performance indicates that pressure was concentrated on blue-chip stocks, but weak liquidity leaves the movement limited and tied to foreign investor flows. Foreign trading volume remains an influential factor in the index's direction, especially in leading stocks and banks that typically benefit from high interest rates, as investors monitor the trajectories of local exchange rates and interest rates. The performance of the Egyptian Exchange remains linked to local interest rate decisions and exchange rate movements, two factors that directly influence investor decisions.
