An unidentified projectile fell inside Yanbu Industrial Port on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast on October 1, sparking a fire, according to maritime security firms. The master of a Liberian-flagged tanker attributed the incident to an air attack, as reported by the "Safety4Sea" platform.
Sources explained that shipping operations linked to that tanker were temporarily halted and later resumed, with no injuries or confirmed damage to infrastructure recorded. No party has claimed responsibility for the incident, and no official confirmation has been issued so far.
The incident comes after Yanbu Port resumed crude oil exports of about two million barrels per day, shortly after the restart of the East-West pipeline on September 22. The port is considered one of the most vital outlets for Saudi crude exports on the Red Sea, making it a critical point for regional energy security.
Targeting an export facility on the Red Sea adds additional pressure on alternative export routes, at a time when tanker traffic in the region is experiencing widespread disruption. Operators are monitoring whether the incident will affect the pace of shipping, insurance, and transport costs through the port.
