U.S. company Rocket Lab announced an agreement to perform 20 launch missions using the Electron rocket for Japan's Earth observation company Synspective, marking the largest commercial launch contract in the company's history. This agreement brings Rocket Lab's total launch mission backlog to over 100 missions, while bringing Synspective's total to 47 contracted Electron missions. The two companies did not disclose the financial value of the deal, and the agreed missions are spread across the years from 2028 to 2031.
In the same context, Citi analyst John Gooden initiated coverage of Rocket Lab stock with a Buy rating and a price target of $105. This move coincided with the same day the company announced the Synspective deal, putting the stock under the radar of institutional investors interested in the commercial space sector. Rocket Lab stock is among the listed stocks that global investors monitor when evaluating the small launch sector.
Surpassing the 100-mission backlog mark means the company has a full schedule for years to come, as backlog represents a measure of contracted business that has not yet been executed. The company's investors benefit from this indicator as it provides a picture of potential future revenue before it is actually recorded in financial statements. Synspective specializes in Earth observation, a sector that relies on regularly launching satellites to update its imagery and analytics.
This development gains importance for Arab investors because the space economy is undergoing a shift from government projects to a commercial industry attracting private capital, and because Gulf countries are investing in satellite sectors and launch services. Valuations of space companies listed on global stock exchanges serve as a benchmark for pricing similar companies in emerging markets, while long-term contracts provide the sector with an indicator of stable demand for launch services.
