Poll: 57% Believe Washington Does Not Take AI Risks Seriously

A poll conducted by Reuters with Ipsos showed that 57% of registered voters believe President Donald Trump's administration has not taken the risks of artificial intelligence seriously "enough or at all," a proportion that includes about a third of Republicans. 54% said the same about Congress, according to MarketScreener.

The poll surveyed 4,506 American adults, including 3,526 registered voters, and was conducted online over six days ending Monday, with a margin of error of two percentage points. 62% considered that the technology "could get out of control and threaten the future of humanity," a figure close to that of a similar poll from August last year.

84% of respondents considered artificial intelligence a threat to American workers, compared to 74% who saw competition from foreign labor, 73% big corporations, and 60% irregular migration as threats. A bipartisan majority favored stricter regulation, at 80% among Democrats and 61% among Republicans, while 56% supported restrictions on building data centers.

Regarding military use, 57% believed the government should not use artificial intelligence to select strike targets, up from 49% in a previous poll conducted in August 2025. This comes ahead of the midterm elections on November 3, where Trump supports AI development and the construction of data centers, while Congress has yet to pass any legislation to control the technology's risks.

What do these terms mean?

Margin of Error: A figure indicating the potential amount of variation in poll results. Here it was two percentage points, meaning each percentage could increase or decrease by roughly this amount if the entire population were surveyed.

Registered Voters: Citizens who have completed the procedures to register to vote in elections, representing the most reliable group for measuring voting intentions.

Midterm Elections: Elections held halfway through the US president's term to renew congressional seats, often turning into a referendum on the governing administration's performance.
