Southeast Asia Startup Funding Remains Below Peak as Activity Concentrates in Singapore

Startup funding in Southeast Asia remains below the record levels achieved in 2021 and 2022, amid a notable concentration of investment activity in Singapore-registered companies operating across regional markets such as Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand.

This landscape reflects the repercussions of a global correction wave that hit venture capital markets between 2022 and 2024, as valuations fell for numerous startups that had received high valuations during the peak period, prompting investors to exercise greater caution when entering the region's markets.

Singapore retains its status as a primary financial and tech hub for the region, offering a mature regulatory environment and an advanced investment ecosystem that attracts companies seeking regional expansion, to the point that many "Singaporean" companies have become cross-border in nature, targeting the entire regional market.

The delayed investment recovery in Southeast Asia indicates that venture capital cycles in emerging markets take longer to recover compared to more mature markets. The question is when sufficient catalysts will accumulate to launch a new wave of funding that matches what the region experienced during its peak period.

What do these terms mean?

Funding Peak: The highest level reached by investment volume in a specific period, usually followed by a correction and decline phase before the market begins a gradual recovery.

Venture Capital Cycle (VC Cycle): The cyclical pattern of investment flow, including phases of rise, peak, correction, and recovery, somewhat similar to real estate or stock market cycles.

Cross-border Company: A company registered in one country that operates and serves customers in other countries, a common pattern for Singapore-based startups targeting the Indonesian and Vietnamese markets.
