AirTrunk Injects $1 Billion into Japan Data Center
Blackstone-backed AirTrunk is adding $1 billion to its campus in Inzai, Japan, for artificial intelligence services, partially financed by a $1 billion green loan from three banks.

Blackstone-backed AirTrunk announced an additional $1 billion injection into its hyperscale campus in Inzai, eastern Japan, known as "TOK1," to expand its capacity beyond 300 megawatts, according to Reuters.
The expansion relies on deploying liquid cooling technology to enable AI workloads at the campus. The financing was partially achieved through a $1 billion green loan led by Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp, MUFG Bank, United Overseas Bank, and other participants.
The company's CEO, Robin Khuda, said TOK1 is slated to be the first campus in Japan to host large-scale AI workload deployments. He added that customers are increasingly turning to Japan from a North Asia perspective due to geopolitical considerations, and that building AI infrastructure will become harder in the United States and is already difficult in Europe, making Asia the "biggest beneficiary."
The move represents the latest in a wave of massive investments in Asian data centers as demand for artificial intelligence accelerates. Reuters quoted the company as saying the expansion aims to meet growing demand in the Japanese market, which is betting on attracting heavy computing workloads from the region.
What Do These Terms Mean?
Green Loan: A loan granted on better terms in exchange for directing funds toward environmentally friendly or low-emission projects, such as improving energy efficiency inside data centers.
Hyperscale Data Center: A large facility housing thousands of servers and leasing its computing power to other companies. Its size is often measured by its electrical capacity in megawatts.
Liquid Cooling: A method for extracting heat from servers using cooling liquids instead of air, which becomes essential when AI processors operate at high density and elevated temperatures.
