Weak Investment in the Middle East vs. Africa's Recovery: Moove Raises $250 Million
Early August tracked only $9 million in MENA amid a clear investment vacuum, while Africa recorded its largest deal of the year led by Moove at $250 million.

Reports from early August 2026 tracked a sharp disparity in venture capital flows between the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and Sub-Saharan Africa. Only two funding rounds were closed in MENA totaling around $9 million, whereas Africa recorded the continent's largest deal of 2026, led by Moove.
The $9 million deployed in MENA during early August represents a tiny fraction compared to the $1.7 billion recorded in the first half of 2026, revealing the widening gap between the capacity of Gulf sovereign wealth funds and the reality of actual deals in the region. Saudi Arabia had reclaimed regional leadership in July by attracting $106.6 million out of the $172.6 million tracked in the entire MENA region.
In contrast, Moove—a mobility vehicle financing company founded in Lagos—announced raising $250 million in a Series C round at a valuation of $2.1 billion, making it the largest deal in Africa during 2026 so far. Meanwhile, South Africa's Moment added $22 million in a Series A round for its enterprise payments infrastructure.
On a broader scale, the first half of 2026 in Africa achieved its best performance in a decade across the healthcare and electric vehicle sectors, although capital remained concentrated in specific names. Analysts warn against reading the Moove deal as evidence of a broad recovery; it is an exceptional achievement for a mature business model linked to Uber and does not necessarily reflect the prevailing funding trajectory on the continent.
