Netherlands Transfers 86 Tonnes of Gold to London to Enhance Crisis Readiness
The Dutch Central Bank transferred around 86 tonnes of gold from North America to London between March and August 2026, raising London's share of its reserves to 32.1% from 18.1%.

The Dutch Central Bank (DNB) transferred about 86 tonnes of gold from North America to London between March and August 2026, in a move it said aims to enhance crisis readiness and ease of trading.
This move raised London's share of the bank's reserves to 32.1 percent from 18.1 percent, while the shares of New York and Ottawa dropped to 18.5 percent each.
Bank Governor Olaf Sleijpen stated that this step aims to strengthen the resilience of reserves and their ability to respond quickly when needed, a rationale that expands the use of gold as a highly liquid reserve asset.
At the end of 2025, the bank held around 612.4 tonnes of gold valued at 72.2 billion euros, equivalent to 80.7 billion dollars, making it one of the prominent holders of the metal among European central banks.
What Do These Terms Mean?

Central Bank: The institution responsible for issuing currency and managing monetary policy and foreign reserves in a country.
Tradability: The ability of an asset to be bought or sold quickly and at low cost, with the London gold market considered the most liquid globally.
