Brent Surpasses $100 and Rerouting Lengthens Europe-Asia Flights

Brent crude traded at $101.5 per barrel, alongside rising flight costs and travel times between Europe and Asia after flights were rerouted via Gulf airports, according to a report by Gulf News. The rerouting added between 60 and 120 minutes to flight durations, reflecting the widening impact of tensions on civil aviation.

In the same context, Air France, KLM, and ITA extended the suspension of their flights to Dubai and several regional destinations until October 24, 2026, leaving options for travelers between Europe and the Gulf limited for the upcoming period.

The newspaper stated that Wizz Air pushed back the resumption date of its flights from Abu Dhabi to early 2027, whereas Lufthansa plans to resume its flights between Dubai, Munich, and Frankfurt on October 25. This divergence indicates that airlines are managing the situation at different paces, with some extending suspensions and others preparing for a gradual return.

This development concerns both travelers and airlines, as rerouting increases fuel, operational costs, and ticket prices on Middle East routes, especially with Brent remaining above $100. This implies that travel costs may stay elevated as long as restrictions on regional airspace persist.

What Do These Terms Mean?

**Brent Crude:** One of the world's most prominent oil pricing benchmarks, from which the prices of many other crudes are derived; hence, investors and companies monitor it as an indicator of energy costs.

**Rerouting:** Altering a flight's route to avoid unsafe or closed airspace, typically resulting in longer distances, extended flight times, and higher fuel costs.

**Airspace:** The atmospheric space in which aircraft are permitted to fly over specific countries or regions, which may be closed or restricted for security reasons.

**Flight Suspension:** An airline's decision to halt its flights to a specific destination for a set period, to be reviewed later depending on security developments.
