Crew-12 Return Postponed to October 7 as Station Command Transfers

Command of the International Space Station transferred from NASA astronaut Jessica Meir to Roscosmos cosmonaut Pyotr Dubrov on October 4. This comes days before the return of the SpaceX 'Crew-12' mission crew to Earth, as reported by CGTN network.

Members of the 'Crew-12' crew bade farewell to the station before the Dragon capsule undocks from the docking port, following a months-long mission. The command handover is a standard tradition ahead of every crew change, reorganizing responsibilities between incoming and outgoing crews.

Undocking has been set for October 7 at the earliest, after originally being scheduled for October 5. The capsule is expected to splash down off the coast of California the following day, weather permitting.

'Crew-12' is known as one of the routine rotation missions that transport astronauts to the station and return others, with SpaceX handling crew transport for NASA. This type of flight constitutes a core pillar of the station's continuous operation for more than two decades. SpaceX conducts these flights under contracts with NASA, linking the station's operational schedule to the agency's timelines.

What do these terms mean?

International Space Station: An orbital laboratory operated by several agencies, including NASA and Roscosmos. Undocking: The departure of a spacecraft from a docking port to begin the return journey. Splashdown: The descent of a capsule by parachutes and landing in the sea. Command Handover: The transfer of station leadership responsibility from one astronaut to another during crew changes.
