Dropping Rhine Water Levels Congest Barges at European Freight Terminals

The Rhine River recorded a sharp drop in water levels during the third week of August 2026, disrupting river barge traffic and causing noticeable congestion at shipping terminals along the waterway, particularly near the entrance to the Port of Rotterdam.

Inland shipping companies reported that fully loaded barges are now forced to reduce their cargo by 25% to 40% to navigate shallow areas, driving up the cost per transported ton by up to 30%.

The repercussions are concentrated in Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, where the heavy industry and chemical sectors rely on the Rhine to transport about 200 million tons annually, while some companies have begun shifting their shipments to road and rail transport.

Forecasts by the German Federal Institute of Hydrology indicate that low water levels could persist until the end of September if the rainy season is delayed, which would increase European inland transport costs amid accumulating logistical pressures. Analysts recall the 2018 Rhine crisis, which halted a large portion of German industry, warning that a recurrence under current tensions would be even more severe.

What Do These Terms Mean?

River Barges: Large, flat-bottomed freight vessels that transport goods via rivers and canals, serving as the backbone of inland transport in Europe.

Low Water Levels: A decline in river depth due to lack of rainfall or high temperatures, which restricts barge capacity and raises shipping costs.

River Freight Terminals: Inland ports along riverbanks used for loading and unloading goods and transferring them between seaports and industrial areas.
