The global average jet fuel price calculated by IATA fell by 4.9% over a week to reach $185.43 per barrel, down from $194.90, at a time when Brent crude returned to trading above $100 per barrel. This index measures the prices paid by airlines to purchase fuel in international markets and is updated weekly.
German carrier Lufthansa stated that the increase in fuel costs during 2026 will exceed its expectations of €1.5 billion, putting pressure on profit margins for airlines facing sharp price competition on tickets. Fuel cost is the largest operational expense for most carriers, with their profit or loss determined by small variations in the price per barrel.
Research firm Energy Aspects expects Europe to face a jet fuel deficit of nearly 510,000 barrels per day in the final quarter of 2026, which could drive up costs for European carriers and limit their ability to expand flights. This comes at a time when airlines are moving to lock in ticket prices to attract passengers, reducing their margin to absorb any cost increases.
This disparity between the weekly price drop and continued cost pressure comes as regional airlines enter a busy travel season, with fuel costs representing one of their largest operational items, and any change directly affecting ticket prices and profit margins.
