Oil prices dropped by about 3%, with Brent crude falling 3.03% to $99.15 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude declining 3.97% to $89.15, as concerns over supply shortages eased following talks on releasing strategic reserves of diesel and crude oil. Both benchmarks are heading toward ending the week with a loss, after a series of previous gains that had pushed them close to $100 levels.

According to Reuters, governments of European Union countries discussed a French proposal to release 50 million barrels of diesel from Europe, alongside 50 million barrels of crude oil from International Energy Agency member states, in a move aimed at calming market supply shortage fears.

The report noted that The Wall Street Journal reported that the United States is sending a third aircraft carrier and up to 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East, meaning that geopolitical tensions in the region remain present alongside supply and demand factors.

The trend in oil prices is directly linked to the economies of the Gulf states through oil revenues and public budgets, and is also reflected in inflation, transportation costs, and energy costs for importing countries. The $100 per barrel level represents an important psychological threshold for the markets, as it determines a large portion of revenue expectations in exporting countries' oil budgets, and influences investment and spending decisions in energy-related sectors.
