SQM's Forecast Lifts Lithium Market Sentiment Despite Price Volatility

Chilean company SQM, the world's largest lithium producer, raised its forecast for global demand for the metal, restoring some optimism to a market that suffered a sharp collapse in prices during 2024 and 2025.

Optimism is mainly driven by the accelerated adoption of electric vehicles in Asia and Europe, as lithium battery orders from Chinese manufacturers grew at a pace exceeding analysts' expectations in the first and second quarters of 2026.

At the same time, analysts warn that price volatility is not over yet, pointing out that the production overcapacity built up during the 2021-2023 boom has not been fully absorbed so far.

Latin America's "Lithium Triangle"—Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia—stands out as the most prominent strategic supplier of this metal globally. Analysts estimate that the market will return to balance in early 2027, provided demand continues to grow at its current pace without major new production expansions.
