Transpacific Freight Rates Jump 10% Weekly Ahead of Scheduled September Increases

Transpacific container freight rates continued their upward trend for the second consecutive week, as Shanghai-to-New York rates jumped 10% week-on-week to reach $8,706 per FEU (forty-foot equivalent unit), while Shanghai-to-Los Angeles rates rose 6% to $6,244 per container, amid persistent capacity shortages.

Major ocean carriers announced general rate increases (GRI) for September 1 and 15, a clear signal that they expect continued upward pressure on rates as the peak season approaches. This trend is reinforced by congestion at Asian ports, vessel diversions from Red Sea routes, and surging seasonal demand.

These increases coincide with simultaneous pressures threatening North American importers: the Panama Canal begins transit reductions on September 3, U.S.-Canadian trade tariffs take effect on September 8, and further rate increases follow on September 15, creating a triple squeeze on import costs ahead of the holiday season.

This surge in freight rates comes at a critical time for North American retailers rushing to build inventory ahead of the holiday shopping season. If transpacific rates remain above $8,000 per FEU through the fourth quarter, cost pressures will inevitably spill over into consumer prices at U.S. stores before year-end.

What Do These Terms Mean?

FEU: Abbreviation for "Forty-Foot Equivalent Unit," the standard large container metric used in ocean shipping. It measures vessel capacity and freight pricing.

General Rate Increase (GRI): A uniform rate hike announced by shipping lines for all customers on a specific date. It typically reflects rising demand or tight capacity, serving as negotiation leverage for carriers.

Peak Shipping Season: The period between August and October when shipments to North America and Europe accelerate to stockpile goods ahead of the holidays. Vessel demand spikes during this period, driving shipping rates to their peak levels.
