Asia-Europe Freight Rates Decline as Capacity Returns via Suez Canal

International shipping markets recorded a decline in spot freight rates on the Asia-Europe route for the second consecutive week, as prices dropped by 5% in Rotterdam and 8% in Genoa compared to the previous week, according to Drewry WCI index data.

The decline followed major shipping lines gradually resuming some voyages via the Suez Canal, adding new carrying capacity to main routes and easing the pressure built up during months of re-routing ships around the Cape of Good Hope.

Container News data indicated that ocean carriers are reviewing their sailing schedules to respond to changing supply and demand dynamics, amid a decline in urgent shipping orders that had artificially inflated prices during the re-routing phase.

These trends are positive for European importers who paid record rates for consecutive months, though the drop remains conditional on the stability of the security situation in the Red Sea, which remains fragile. Analysts warn that any on-the-ground escalation could quickly drive prices back up, viewing the current phase as an opportunity for importers to contract at better rates ahead of the peak season.

What do these terms mean?

Spot freight rates: Rates agreed upon on the spot for transporting goods without long-term contracts, reflecting immediate market supply and demand.

Drewry WCI index: A weekly index published by research firm Drewry measuring average container shipping rates across eight major global trade routes.

Cape of Good Hope: An alternative sea route sailing around South Africa used to avoid the Red Sea, adding 10-14 days to the voyage compared to the Suez Canal.
