Healthleap Raises $38 Million for AI That Identifies At-Risk Patients

Healthleap has raised $38 million across two funding rounds: an $8 million seed round co-led by Sequoia Capital and First Round Capital, and a $30 million Series A round led by Hummingbird Ventures.

The system reads patients' medical records and analyzes their data to alert medical staff to conditions that may require closer attention, such as malnutrition and delirium, two common conditions among patients that increase the risk of complications if not detected early.

Founded in South Africa in 2022 by siblings Jemima and Josiah Meyer, the company says its system is now used in more than 50 hospitals, meaning its operations are no longer confined to a single market but have expanded to healthcare institutions in multiple countries.

The company did not disclose the valuation on which the two rounds were based, according to TechCrunch, a detail that makes it difficult for investors and observers to compare the size of the rounds relative to the company's scale at present.

What do these terms mean?

Seed round: The first funding a startup receives, typically used to develop and test the product before scaling.

Series A: The first major funding round a startup receives after its seed round, typically used to expand the team and product.

Medical records: Electronic files containing a patient's medical history, test results, and medications, used by doctors to make treatment decisions.

Delirium: A sudden disruption in attention and awareness affecting some patients, especially the elderly, and often linked to an illness, medication, or surgery.
