The People's Bank of China increased its country's gold reserves by 20.2 tons in August, bringing total official reserves to 2,387 tons, according to a report by the German platform "Börse Express". This level represents about 9% of China's total foreign reserves, reflecting the continuous expansion of the yellow metal within the country's portfolio without interruption.
This expansion comes at a time when central banks globally have continued to bolster their gold holdings as an asset not directly tied to currency fluctuations and used for reserve diversification. Central bank purchases are one of the structural factors investors monitor to interpret price trajectories beyond daily fluctuations, as regular official buying absorbs part of the supply and limits the severity of declines.
In the fund market, global gold exchange-traded funds recorded inflows of $1.72 billion against outflows of $1.59 billion, marking the tenth consecutive time these funds registered net inflows, according to the platform. Investors in the United States withdrew $683 million, while investors in the United Kingdom added $438 million, in a contrast reflecting differing institutional timing in adjusting positions.
Spot gold prices closed down 0.8% at $4,144.04 per ounce in recent trading, with pressure remaining from rising bond yields and a strong dollar. The continuation of official buying indicates that official sector demand remains a pillar for the market even as prices fluctuate in short-term trading, making monthly reserve data an indicator closely followed by traders.
What do these terms mean?
Foreign reserves are assets held by a country in foreign currencies and gold to meet liabilities and support its currency. Gold ETFs are exchange-traded funds that track the metal's price, allowing an investor to buy them instead of storing physical gold. Inflows represent the net money entering the fund over a period, measured by the difference between purchases and redemptions. The spot price is the price for immediate delivery of the metal in global trading.
