Official data showed that Qatar welcomed 2.338 million visitors during the first eight months of 2026, representing a 30% decline from the 3.3 million visitors recorded in the same period last year. These figures were part of data from "Qatar Tourism" published by the Qatar News Agency.

Visitor numbers in August reached 303,000, up 6.3% from July, indicating a gradual improvement in arrivals after months of decline. This means that the final month of the summer season regained part of the momentum the sector lost in the first half of the year.

Gulf markets accounted for 41% of total incoming visitors, reflecting a heavy reliance on regional tourism amid a drop in arrivals from distant markets. This concentration makes Qatar's market more susceptible to any shifts in demand within the region itself.

Official data attributed this decline to the war between the United States and Iran that began on February 28, which impacted travel to the region, while Qatar continues to develop its tourism infrastructure to attract more visitors and restore pre-crisis numbers.

What Do These Terms Mean?

Arrivals: The number of international travelers entering a country during a specific period, serving as a primary metric for tourism performance.

Source Markets: The countries from which tourists originate when visiting a specific destination; their diversity determines the stability of demand for the destination.

Year-on-Year Decline: A comparison of the current figure with the figure recorded in the same period of the previous year to eliminate the effect of seasonal variations.
