Rocket Lab Secures $397 Million US Space Force Contract for Neutron Rocket

Commercial space company Rocket Lab has signed a $397 million contract with the US Space Force to utilize the new Neutron rocket to launch a network of satellites specialized in detecting missile threats and tracking hostile space objects.

This contract represents official recognition by the Pentagon of the Neutron rocket as a reliable defense launch platform even before the rocket completes its maiden test flight, signaling high confidence from US military entities based on the company's track record with the Electron rocket.

With this contract, Rocket Lab joins a select list of companies qualified to execute sensitive defense launch missions managed by the Pentagon, indicating the US military's openness to deeper partnerships with commercial space startups as an alternative to exclusive reliance on traditional contractors.

Through this deal, $397 million is added to the company's backlog, which has exceeded $2.36 billion, strengthening its financial position and justifying continued investment in Neutron's development. Analysts believe that if Neutron succeeds in its initial flights, it will pose real competition to SpaceX's Falcon 9 in the US medium-lift market.

What do these terms mean?

US Space Force: The sixth military branch of the US Armed Forces, established in 2019, responsible for managing military space assets, protecting US interests in space, and deploying satellites for communications, intelligence, and defense purposes.

Development and verification contract: A type of government contract that funds the development of a new system or technology in exchange for the government entity acquiring the right to use it or purchase its services upon completion, reducing risks for both parties.

Next-Gen Launch: A modern generation of commercial rockets combining heavy payload capacity, reusability, and low cost, which Rocket Lab is attempting to achieve with the Neutron rocket to compete with Falcon 9 and New Glenn.
