Paris Is Too Hot for Coats. Riyadh's Ramadan Nights Need Layers.

Summary

Heat is breaking Europe's fashion calendar. In Saudi Arabia the moon sets the calendar, and it is moving Ramadan into Riyadh's coldest weeks.

On 7 October, Reuters reported from Paris Fashion Week, where temperatures reached 28 degrees Celsius and guests arrived in sleeveless tops and mini skirts. Coats were scarce. Louis Vuitton’s Nicolas Ghesquière said Europe’s record heatwaves shaped his new collection and described clothes “like a second skin”. Pau Almar, a retail consultant who spent a decade at Zara, said the selling window for coats has moved later.

The commercial worry is simple. Outerwear usually carries higher margins, so a late winter could squeeze profit. Shoppers may hold out for Black Friday before buying a coat. Retailers, Almar said, will have to sell fewer heavy coats and more transitional layers.

What the coverage assumes

Notice the frame. The calendar is the normal thing and the weather is the problem. Fashion still runs on a year written for Paris and Milan: spring and summer, then autumn and winter, with the coat paying for the second half.

Saudi Arabia imported that year whole. Even Riyadh Fashion Week, held in October 2025, was billed as SS26.

Translation: for Europe, the heat is the problem. For a Saudi founder, the calendar always was.

Where it breaks in Saudi Arabia

A founder in Riyadh runs on two other clocks.

The first is the thermometer. Riyadh averages daytime highs above 39 degrees from May to September and about 35 in October. Winter is real but brief. January days average around 20 degrees and nights drop to around 8 or 9. Riyadh has a coat season. It happens at night, between December and February.

The second clock is the moon, and it matters more. The Hijri year is 10 to 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan arrives earlier every year. Between 2016 and 2020 it began in June, May or late April, when average highs in Riyadh sit between 34 and 44 degrees. If your label launched around then, its first Ramadans were sold in the heat. So were your instincts about fabric.

That has flipped. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on 8 February, and Ramadan 2028 on 28 January. The month is walking into Riyadh’s coldest weeks and will keep moving deeper into winter for several years. The last time it sat there was the late 1990s. Ramadan nights in Riyadh are long and social, and by suhoor the city will be at around 10 degrees.

Then there is a date no global calendar mentions. Founding Day, 22 February, has been an annual national holiday since 2022. In 2027 it falls in the middle of Ramadan. In 2028 it lands in Ramadan’s last week. Two dress occasions will share the same weeks and the same wallet.

What to do this quarter

The independent labels I work with run two or three capsules a year, and the ones built around a moment sell through faster than the ones built around a season. A season is a guess about the weather. A moment is a date your customer has already put in her diary. From first sketch to launch takes four to six months. Count back from 8 February and your Ramadan fabric is being chosen now, in a 35-degree October.

Cooks season a cold dish harder because they taste for the plate, not the pot. Buy fabric the same way. Choose it for a Riyadh night in February, not for the warm afternoon you are sampling in. Think heavier crepes, lined pieces, knits and wool blends that still drape. You can alter a hem in a day. You cannot alter a fabric weight once it is cut.

Make the layer your hero product. European retailers are only now learning they need more transitional layers. Your customer has needed one for years. She needs it on a Riyadh night in January, and she needs it all summer in the air conditioning. Price it like a hero, not like an add-on.

Decide now what Founding Day means for you in 2027. A small label cannot afford two launches two weeks apart. One capsule that carries heritage detail and still works after iftar can do the job of both. Two half-funded capsules will do neither.

Then launch your layers in November, at full price. Nights in Riyadh fall towards 14 degrees, and Riyadh Season opens on 21 October for ten weeks of concerts and fight nights. Your customer will have somewhere to wear the layer. Do not let Europe’s markdown problem teach her to wait for a discount on it.

Paris sweated through its autumn clothes this month. Make sure your customer does not shiver through Ramadan in summer ones.
