Europe and Vast Sign Agreement for Post-ISS Era
The European Space Agency signs a new memorandum of understanding with the American company Vast, covering potential flights for European astronauts to the Haven station.

The European Space Agency signed a new memorandum of understanding with the American company Vast during the 2026 International Astronautical Congress, replacing a previous memorandum from June 2024. It initially spans three years, starting with a joint feasibility study.
The memorandum covers potential flights for European astronauts aboard Vast's Haven station, potential agency contributions in equipment, joint research campaigns, and allocations for upmass, downmass, and crew time.
Vast CEO Max Haot stated that both parties are already collaborating on four crewed missions to the International Space Station and the Haven-1 station scheduled for 2027, according to the European Space Agency statement.
This step comes at a time when the International Space Station is approaching the end of its operational life, prompting agencies to look for commercial alternatives to continue research in orbit. Through the memorandum, the European Space Agency seeks to secure a European presence aboard upcoming commercial stations.
What do these terms mean?
Memorandum of Understanding: A legally non-binding document that outlines a framework for cooperation between two parties and paves the way for broader agreements.
Haven Station: A commercial space station developed by Vast to host research and crews after the retirement of the International Space Station.
Feasibility Study: An initial analysis assessing the viability and costs of executing a project before committing to it.
Upmass and Downmass: The amount of payload transported to or returned from orbit, which is factored into flight costs.
