The Dollar Ticks Up in Egyptian Banks, But the Move Is Not the Story

The dollar closed slightly higher at most Egyptian banks, quoted at around 49.80 pounds for buying and 49.90 pounds for selling at lenders including the National Bank of Egypt and Banque Misr.

Reading that number in isolation, however, obscures the bigger picture, because the currency is trading within a very narrow band.

A small day-to-day difference does not by itself mean a new trend has started, since a trend requires sustained movement over a longer stretch.

Dollar moves are driven by supply and demand for foreign currency, as well as by the volume of dollar inflows reaching the market.

On that basis, a single session's gain is not enough to conclude that the dollar has entered an upward wave.

The conclusion is that daily movement in the number is one thing, and the market's underlying direction is another.
