NASA and ISRO Launch Partnership to Build Lunar Research Base by 2040

The US agency NASA and the Indian space agency ISRO have announced a strategic partnership framework to build a joint research base on the lunar surface, under the umbrella of the US-led Artemis program to return humans to the Moon and establish a permanent human presence there.

The agreement aims to launch the base's first residential and laboratory modules by 2040, with ISRO contributing its technologies in heavy-lift rockets and landing systems, while NASA provides ground control and guidance infrastructure and habitat module development.

This announcement comes amid escalating international space competition, particularly after India's successful landing of its Chandrayaan-3 probe near the lunar south pole in 2023, an achievement that solidified ISRO's status as a pivotal player in the lunar exploration race.

The joint base is expected to provide a platform for conducting scientific experiments in low-gravity conditions and testing resource extraction technologies from lunar soil, such as water and oxygen, paving the way for deeper crewed space missions. Officials emphasized that US-India cooperation forms a key pillar for the future of the space economy over the coming decade.
