Typhoon Champi Suspends Bunkering at China's Zhoushan Anchorages

Bunkering operations at Zhoushan's outer Tiaozhoumen and Xiazhimen anchorages were suspended on Tuesday due to bad weather brought by Typhoon Champi, according to an industry source.

Operations continued at the more sheltered Xiushandong anchorage and the inner Mazhi anchorage. Maximum sustained winds near Champi's center reached 230 kilometers per hour, making it a super typhoon.

The typhoon is moving west-northwest at a speed of 21 kilometers per hour and is expected to cross the seas east of Luzon today and Wednesday, passing about 360 kilometers east of Taiwan on Friday before entering the East China Sea on Saturday.

It is expected to pass east of Zhoushan on Sunday, with winds weakening to about 90 kilometers per hour. The disruption comes amid supply pressures in Zhoushan, where suppliers are recommending lead times of about 11 days for VLSFO, LSMGO, and HSFO fuels.

What Do These Terms Mean?

VLSFO: Very low sulfur fuel oil with a sulfur content of 0.5% or less, used in most modern commercial vessels.

LSMGO: Low-sulphur marine gas oil, a distillate fuel lighter than heavy fuel oil, used in engines and generators.

HSFO: High-sulphur fuel oil above the 0.50% sulphur cap, typically up to 3.5%, requiring exhaust gas cleaning systems to operate.
