Gold Drops 1.86% as US Yields Rise and Oil-Driven Inflation Expectations Climb

Spot gold dropped 1.86% to $4,334.57 per ounce in a double blow that combined two pressures that normally operate separately: rising long-term US bond yields on one side, and escalating inflation expectations driven by oil prices on the other.

Higher yields put pressure on gold because they raise the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding metal. The paradox, however, is that rising inflation—which historically drives demand for gold as a safe haven—simultaneously reinforces expectations of higher yields, doubling the pressure rather than easing it.

Analysts are eyeing the $4,250 level as key technical support, as breaking below it could open the door to a broader sell-off, while geopolitical uncertainty linked to the Strait of Hormuz maintains some defensive demand for the metal.

This decline reveals that gold faces a rare and exceptional environment in its history; combining high yields and high inflation at the same time narrows the metal's margin of viability even in moments when it is supposed to shine.

What do these terms mean?

Opportunity Cost: What an investor loses in returns by choosing one asset over another—in the case of gold, it is the return that could have been earned from bonds had they been chosen instead of the metal.

Spot Gold: The purchase or sale price of gold for immediate physical delivery in the market, as opposed to gold futures contracts that specify future delivery.

Inflation Expectations: What investors expect the rate of price increases to be in the future, which influences buying and selling decisions before inflation actually materializes.
