UAE-based MetisJean has raised $3 million, equivalent to about 11 million AED, in a pre-seed funding round to develop its platform "Jean," which it describes as "sovereign" artificial intelligence that gives companies control over their data and decisions. Startup Rise reported that the company did not disclose the names of its investors or its founders.

The company stated that a working version of the platform is currently in use with an initial group of clients, and that it seeks to raise an additional $5 million from investors in the region. The description "sovereign" means that data and models operate within an environment controlled by the client rather than passing through external servers.

The company claims its platform offers a reduction in token costs of up to 90%, a figure that has not been independently verified and for which no technical details have been published. Token count is used to measure usage volume rather than response quality; therefore, this type of metric requires supporting data before being adopted as an indicator.

The funding comes at a time of rising competition over enterprise-oriented AI services in the region, with Gulf governments focusing on data and computing localization. The size of this round is considered small compared to other rounds in the sector, making the company's trajectory dependent on its ability to demonstrate actual client usage before its next round.

What do these terms mean?

Pre-seed: The first funding stage in a startup's life cycle, typically used to develop an initial product. Sovereign AI: Operating AI systems within a client-controlled environment to protect their data. Large Language Model: A computer system trained on vast amounts of text to generate responses. Tokens: The smallest units of text processed by a model, used to measure usage volume.
