AI inference chip startup Etched is considering unsolicited financing offers at valuations ranging from $40 billion from top-tier investors to $50 billion from lesser-known investors, according to TechCrunch citing a person familiar with the matter. The source stated that the offers came without solicitation from the company.
This compares to a valuation of $21 billion in a $700 million round announced last September, meaning the new offers represent a leap that could more than double its value in a few weeks. If one of the offers materializes at this level, it would mark one of the fastest valuation surges for a chip startup.
The report noted that discussions are at an early stage and not final, and Etched declined to comment. The company is working on chips specifically designed to run AI models after they are trained, a phase known as inference. Demand for these chips has surged with the expanding use of models in everyday applications.
Jane Street led the September round and is both an investor and a customer that received an early system from the company, reflecting the growing overlap between AI chip funding and actual demand for them. This indicates that investors are now valuing chip companies based on real demand for their products rather than promises alone.
What do these terms mean?

Specialized Chips: Processors designed for a single task such as AI, rather than general-purpose processors.
Valuation: The estimated value of the entire company upon completing a funding round.
Top-Tier Investor: A large, highly prominent fund or investment firm that typically leads rounds.
