S&P Affirms Egypt's Rating at 'B' with Stable Outlook

S&P Global Ratings affirmed Egypt's sovereign credit rating at 'B/B' for long- and short-term obligations, while maintaining a stable outlook, as reported by Business Today Egypt.

The agency attributed its decision to Egypt's track record in implementing reform programs and external financial support received by the economy, maintaining the outlook stable despite ongoing regional tensions.

The affirmation comes at a time when September inflation reached 13.9% annually, and the Central Bank of Egypt's key interest rate remained stable at 19.00%, a combination reflecting slowing price pressures while borrowing costs remain high.

Maintaining the rating with a stable outlook means the agency currently sees no significant likelihood of a downgrade in the near term, and sovereign obligations maintain their risk level in the eyes of the markets.

What do these terms mean?

Sovereign Rating: An assessment issued by a specialized agency regarding a country's ability to pay its debts on time, which determines the cost of its borrowing from the markets.

Outlook: The agency's direction regarding the likelihood of upgrading, downgrading, or maintaining the rating over 18 months to two years.

Long- and Short-Term Rating: The long-term rating pertains to debt of one year or more, while the short-term rating pertains to debt for the coming months.

External Financial Support: Funds received by the state from international partners or financial institutions, such as loans and deposits, strengthening its foreign exchange reserves and financial position.
