Gold Nears $4,600 Driven by Central Bank Demand and Geopolitical Tensions
The price of gold approached the $4,600 per ounce level, driven by escalating demand from central banks and growing global geopolitical uncertainty.

Global gold prices neared the $4,600 per ounce mark, setting new record levels, amid a simultaneous surge in two main drivers: sustained demand from central banks and growing geopolitical uncertainty in multiple regions around the world.
A World Gold Council report revealed that central banks continued their record purchases of the yellow metal, with the central banks of China, Poland, and Turkey leading the list of top buyers, in a clear effort to reduce reliance on the US dollar in official reserves.
Escalating tension in the Middle East and around the Strait of Hormuz has boosted gold's appeal as a safe haven, as investors resort to the precious metal whenever uncertainty rises in financial markets or the potential for conflict escalates.
Opinions differ on the sustainability of this rally: while some analysts believe gold could surpass $5,000 if geopolitical pressures persist, others warn that any diplomatic de-escalation or sharp US interest rate hike could pull prices back down. Gold is now among the world's best-performing assets in 2025, outperforming returns from most major stock and bond indices.
What do these terms mean?
Safe Haven: An asset that investors resort to when risks escalate because it maintains its value or rises during crisis times, with gold being its most prominent historical example alongside the Swiss franc and Japanese yen.
Dollarization of Reserves: Over-reliance on the US dollar in storing official national reserves, which many central banks are seeking to move away from by purchasing gold and other currencies.
Troy Ounce: The standard unit of weight used in international pricing of gold and precious metals, equivalent to approximately 31.1 grams, differing from the common ounce used in some countries.
