Artificial Intelligence Will Not Give You Fridays Off and Increases Workload Rather Than Lightening It

Rosy expectations regarding artificial intelligence are rapidly colliding with reality, as recent field studies and research reveal that corporate adoption of AI tools does not reduce working hours but often increases them, with every productivity enhancement creating new work that fills the saved time.

This phenomenon of work expansion embodies what economists call the "productivity paradox," where the more efficient workers become thanks to digital tools, the higher employers' expectations rise, expanding each employee's duties to encompass what previously required multiple people, thereby eliminating the time savings promised by AI.

On the other hand, some evidence indicates that employees who master using AI tools achieve higher value in the labor market; however, this comes at the cost of escalating pressure to produce more in less time, rather than enjoying more leisure time as major tech companies promised.

This reality casts a shadow over the core promise on which the AI revolution was built: technology does not free up time, but rather redistributes it from the worker's pocket to the producer's pocket. Unless labor policies intervene to redistribute productivity gains to workers, the Friday off will remain a distant dream.
