FTSE 100 Posts Best Weekly Performance Boosted by Gold and Copper Rally

The UK's FTSE 100 index closed Friday's trading at 10,816.6 points, up 0.6% on the day, while recording its best weekly performance in recent times, supported strongly by mining companies.

Mining stocks listed on the index led the rally, benefiting from gold prices rising to a record high of $4,627 per ounce, in addition to copper climbing to $6.58 per pound.

In contrast, the mid-cap FTSE 250 index registered its first weekly decline in six weeks, despite rising 0.9% in Friday's session alone. This disparity is attributed to mid-cap companies' sensitivity to interest rate path concerns.

The divergence between the large-cap and mid-cap indexes reflects investor anxiety over interest rate expectations in the United Kingdom. While optimists believe that continued gains in metal prices will maintain momentum for the FTSE 100, skeptics warn that inflationary pressures and delayed rate cuts could weigh heavily on mid-sized companies and prolong their decline.

What do these terms mean?

FTSE 100: An index comprising the top 100 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange by market capitalization, serving as a primary benchmark for the health of the UK economy.

FTSE 250: An index comprising companies ranked 101st to 350th on the London Stock Exchange, reflecting the UK domestic economy's performance more than the FTSE 100.

Interest Rate Sensitivity: The degree to which stock prices are affected by changes in interest rates; mid-cap companies tend to be more sensitive due to their higher reliance on borrowing.
