U.S. prosecutors have charged 38-year-old Greg Lui, owner of Earthmade Computer Inc., with exporting servers containing Nvidia AI chips worth nearly $300 million to China without prior licenses.
Reports stated that the exports took place during 2023 and 2024 via Malaysia and Singapore, and that the defendant denied the charges against him, according to case documents cited by Bloomberg.
The charges were jointly announced by federal prosecutors, the FBI, and the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security, the three agencies responsible for enforcing export rules on sensitive technologies and tracking illicit routes.
This case highlights the importance of export controls in technology trade routes passing through the Gulf region, as U.S. regulators track pathways used to transport advanced chips to restricted markets through intermediary countries, with monitoring covering shipping companies, commercial brokers, and transit ports. The case underscores that indirect routes remain the most prominent vulnerability in export control systems for advanced technologies.
What do these terms mean?
A server is a powerful computer used to run artificial intelligence models and process big data. Nvidia chips are advanced processors designed for these tasks. Export controls are rules that prevent the sale of sensitive technologies to specific countries without prior authorization. A federal indictment is a charge brought by U.S. federal authorities rather than state authorities, and denying the charge means pleading not guilty in court.
