Fixed or Variable? Egypt’s Savings Certificates Split on 100,000 Pounds
Certificates differ in yield and payout timing: fixed rates give predictable income, variable ones a higher headline return that can move.

Banks are offering savings certificates that differ in both yield and payout frequency, and the distinction goes beyond the headline rate to when the money is paid and whether the rate can move during the term.
A fixed certificate paying 17.75% on 100,000 Egyptian pounds delivers roughly 1,479 pounds a month, at the same amount every month until maturity.
By comparison, a certificate paying 17.85% on a quarterly schedule delivers about 4,463 pounds every three months — a larger sum per payment, but less frequently.
A variable certificate at 19.5% works out at roughly 1,625 pounds a month on the same principal, though that rate moves up or down as interest rates change.
The core trade-off is straightforward: a fixed yield buys clarity of income for the full term, while a variable yield offers the chance of a higher return in exchange for uncertainty.
Assessing the term, the payout schedule and the penalty for early withdrawal therefore matters as much as the rate itself, because the highest number is not always the best fit.
Key terms explained:
Savings certificate: A fixed-term deposit with a bank for a set amount, paying an agreed periodic yield.
Fixed yield: A rate that does not change for the life of the certificate, whatever happens to market interest rates.
Variable yield: A rate that rises or falls in line with central bank decisions on interest rates.
Payout frequency: How often the yield is paid — monthly, quarterly or annually — which shapes the saver’s cash flow.
Maturity date: The day the term ends and the principal is returned to the saver.
Early withdrawal: Taking the money back before the term ends, which usually costs part of the accrued yield.
Interest rates: The rates set by the central bank for borrowing and deposits, the benchmark that variable yields track.
