Egypt Reopens the Gold Packaging Debate: Product Protection or Buyer Trap?

Debate has resurfaced in Egypt's gold market over the sealed packaging of bullion bars and gold coins, as more buying and selling moves onto digital platforms.

Saied Embabi, chief executive of the platform, said the packaging is not a deceptive tactic but a way to protect the bar or coin and preserve its condition from manufacture through to sale.

The real dispute, according to Embabi, lies in the cashback condition. He stressed that customers have the right to open the packaging, inspect the gold and still receive the full cashback amount, whether the seal remains intact or has been broken.

He added that tying the refund value to the state of the packaging remains a custom among some dealers, and should not harden into a binding market rule.

On prices, gold traded at roughly $4,348 an ounce globally, which pushed the price of a gram of 21-carat gold in Egypt past 6,100 pounds to around 6,120 pounds.

In the same context, gold continues to serve as a safe haven amid swings in oil and the dollar and persistent geopolitical tension.

The question now facing regulators and dealers alike is whether the gold market needs clearer rules to protect the buyer.

Key terms explained:

Bullion bar: A cast piece of gold of defined weight and purity, bought as an investment rather than as jewellery.

Gold coin (gineih): A small gold coin traded in Egypt for saving, with a narrower gap between buying and selling prices than jewellery carries.

21-carat: A purity level meaning 21 of 24 parts are pure gold; it is the most widely traded grade in Egypt.

Ounce: The international unit for precious metals, about 31.1 grams, and the basis on which gold is priced globally.

Cashback: A sum returned to the buyer after a purchase, used as a marketing incentive by selling platforms.

Safe haven: An asset investors move into during turmoil to preserve value, with gold the classic example.
