SpaceX's Starlink network has passed the milestone of 11,000 active satellites in low Earth orbit, while the company simultaneously completed the thirty-seventh flight of a single reusable Falcon 9 rocket, setting a new historic record in rocket reusability.
At its current size, the Starlink network represents the largest satellite constellation in human history by a wide margin over its nearest competitors, providing satellite internet service to more than four million subscribers across over 100 countries worldwide, including remote and conflict areas that are difficult to cover with terrestrial networks.
The new Falcon 9 reusability record embodies the revolution SpaceX has brought to the economics of space access, as the company can now launch a rocket that costs tens of millions of dollars to build multiple times instead of discarding it after every launch.
These cumulative developments put pressure on competitors such as Amazon Kuiper and European and Chinese satellite internet companies that are still trying to catch up with Starlink in service coverage and subscriber numbers. Analysts believe that surpassing 11,000 satellites gives Starlink an almost insurmountable competitive barrier that will be difficult for any competitor to break in less than a decade.
