2-Year Yield Slips to 4.17% While the Long End Refuses to Rally
Fading hike odds pulled the 2-year down about 2bp, but the 30-year held at 5.24%: fiscal supply and tariff-driven inflation keep a floor under term premium.

The 2-year US Treasury yield fell about two basis points to 4.17% as market odds of another rate hike faded, while the 30-year held steady at 5.24%, declining to follow it lower.
That refusal at the long end of the yield curve is the session's real tell. When rate fears ease, long yields are supposed to fall too; their failure to do so means investors' worry is no longer just the central bank's path.
On one side, the US fiscal deficit keeps pumping a steady supply of new bonds that need buyers; on the other, tariff-linked inflation keeps investors wary about consumer prices over the long run. Both factors put a floor under term premium that is hard to break.
The practical meaning is that the market now separates two stories: a short-term rates story that is improving, and a fiscal-and-structural-inflation story that is not. Whoever reads the yield curve today is really reading the US government's budget more than the central bank's intentions.
Key terms explained:
Bond yield: The annual interest received by an investor who buys a bond and holds it to maturity.
Basis point: One hundredth of a percentage point, so 100 basis points equals 1%.
Yield curve: A line showing government bond yields across maturities, from two years to thirty years.
Long end: Longer-dated bonds such as the 30-year, reflecting long-run growth and inflation expectations.
Term premium: The extra yield investors demand for locking up money for many years and bearing inflation and supply risk.
Fiscal deficit: Government spending exceeding revenue, typically financed by issuing new bonds.
