UK Labor Market Shows Slowdown in Hiring While Wage Growth Remains High

British labor market data revealed that the unemployment rate reached 4.9% in the three months ending in June, while net new jobs came in at 83,000, falling short of expectations in a sign of weakening demand for labor.

Year-on-year wage growth continued at 4.1%, a level considered high enough to keep the Bank of England cautious about rushing to cut interest rates, as rising wages feed inflationary pressures in the services sector.

These figures place monetary policymakers in a delicate position: a labor market showing some slack on one hand, and wage pressures echoing inflation levels on the other.

Analysts describe this picture as a "selective slowdown," making it likely that the Monetary Policy Committee will maintain its cautious approach and not rush to soften its stance before the path of services inflation becomes clear.

What do these terms mean?

Unemployment Rate: The proportion of people able to work and seeking employment who have not found it — a figure of 4.9% means that about 5 out of every 100 working-age people are unemployed.

Net New Jobs (Payrolls): The number of jobs added to the labor market after accounting for lost jobs — a lower-than-expected figure indicates a slowdown in hiring demand.

Wage Growth: The annual increase in average worker earnings — if it exceeds the inflation target (2%), the central bank remains hesitant to cut rates for fear of persistent inflationary pressures.
