Rising Interest Rates Plunge Semiconductor Index by 5% and CoreWeave Collapses 12% in a Single Session
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 4.96% to 531 points on August 18, while CoreWeave plunged 11.8% due to interest rate pressures on debt-laden AI infrastructure companies.

The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX) fell by 4.96% to 531.39 points in the August 18 session, amid a wave of pressure imposed by rising bond yields on debt-laden AI infrastructure companies.
Shares of CoreWeave (CRWV) declined by 11.8% in a single session. The company, which provides cloud infrastructure for AI, has a debt-to-equity ratio exceeding 14 times, making it one of the most vulnerable companies to the risks of rising borrowing costs.
Markets are awaiting Nvidia's earnings report scheduled for August 26, with analysts expecting revenues between $28.3 billion and $31 billion, in a pivotal event for the trajectory of all global tech markets.
These shifts reveal real risks long ignored by the markets, as high interest rates could reprice the entire AI ecosystem, revealing that some companies built their positions on cheap borrowing that will not return in the same way.
What Do These Terms Mean?
Philadelphia Semiconductor Index (SOXX): An index that tracks the performance of the largest semiconductor design and manufacturing companies, and is used as a key benchmark for the health of the global semiconductor sector.
Debt-to-Equity Ratio: A metric showing how much each dollar of a company's assets relies on borrowing — the higher the number, the more vulnerable the company is to rising interest rates.
