IEA Warns of Rapidly Declining Oil Inventories Due to Strait of Hormuz Disruption

The International Energy Agency has warned that global oil inventories are declining at an accelerated pace, amid the continued severe disruption of energy cargo movements through the Strait of Hormuz.

The agency noted that the drop in the number of oil tankers passing through the strait to between just two and three per day is worsening the crisis, in the absence of an alternative capable of absorbing this volume of supplies in the short term.

This warning has prompted a number of oil-importing countries to release part of their strategic reserves in an effort to ease pressure on markets and prevent a sharp rise in energy prices for consumers.

Analysts believe that the continuation of this situation for additional weeks could force markets into a complete repricing of the global energy system, casting a shadow over inflation and economic growth in several regions — led by Europe and Asia, which are heavily reliant on Gulf oil.
