Chinese Economy Grows 4.3% in Second Quarter, Below Expectations Due to Weak Domestic Demand

The Chinese economy expanded by 4.3% year-on-year during the second quarter of 2026, recording a performance below expectations that pointed to growth exceeding 4.8%, amid a noticeable weakness in domestic demand indicators.

Data revealed a sharper decline in consumer spending among Chinese households than analysts expected, while the real estate and construction sectors continued to weigh on the macroeconomy amid an ongoing debt crisis in the sector.

These results prompted several major investment banks to lower their full-year growth forecasts for the Chinese economy, while commodity markets began moving downwards, reflecting the expected decline in Chinese demand for metals and energy.

The slowdown in the Chinese economy poses double pressure on the global landscape; it reduces demand for commodities on one hand, and adds to escalating trade tensions with Washington on the other — at a time when markets need any glimmer of stability.

What do these terms mean?

Gross Domestic Product (GDP): The most comprehensive measure of an economy's size, representing the total value of goods and services produced in a country during a specific period, with its growth rate used as a key indicator of economic health.

Domestic Demand: The total spending by a country's residents internally, including private and government consumption as well as investment, making it one of the most important drivers of economic growth.

Real Estate Debt Crisis: The situation where major Chinese real estate development companies suffer from severe financial distress as a result of accumulated debt, which has impacted domestic confidence in investment and consumption.
