Report: OpenAI's Annual Revenue Nears $50 Billion
The Financial Times reported that OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue is approaching $50 billion, about $20 billion lower than a previous figure.

OpenAI has informed its investors that its annualized revenue is approaching $50 billion, according to the Financial Times. This figure is about $20 billion lower than the previous estimate of around $70 billion, as reported by TechCrunch.
The report noted that the higher figure stemmed from investors' attempts to compare OpenAI directly with its rival Anthropic. Anthropic includes its cloud partners' sales in its calculations, an item OpenAI does not account for in the same way, widening the gap between the two figures.
TechCrunch stated that OpenAI did not comment on these figures. The report comes at a time when AI company valuations are facing increased scrutiny from investors who are comparing model revenues against their rising operational costs.
The difference is particularly significant because annualized revenue is used as a key metric to gauge the growth of AI companies prior to an IPO. The accounting of cloud partner revenue varies from company to company, making direct comparisons between competitors difficult without standardized accounting bases.
What Do These Terms Mean?
Annualized Revenue: An estimate of full-year revenue based on performance over a shorter period, such as a month or a quarter, used to compare company growth rates prior to an initial public offering.
Valuation: The estimated market value of the company as a whole, typically calculated by multiplying the share price by the number of shares or by comparing its revenue to similar companies.
Cloud Computing: Renting processing power and servers over the internet instead of owning them, which is the infrastructure upon which AI companies build and run their models.
