AI Boom Revitalizes Asia, but Southeast Asia Fears Being Left Behind in the Long Run

Asian economies are experiencing a notable surge driven by the artificial intelligence boom, as investments pour into data centers and digital infrastructure. However, economists warn that Southeast Asian nations will be the weakest link in this wave unless they take the initiative to build genuine digital capabilities.

Experts point out that most investments in Southeast Asia are concentrated in physical infrastructure, such as data centers and fiber-optic cables, which generates immediate revenue for governments and local labor, but fails to establish true competitiveness in the AI industry itself over the long term.

In contrast, countries like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan are leveraging the AI boom to strengthen their domestic industries in chip design, software, and research and development, widening the gap between these true winners and nations that merely lease their land for data centers.

This reality poses a fundamental question for decision-makers in the region: Is it enough to host AI servers without producing AI, or will countries focusing solely on infrastructure find themselves stuck supplying technological wealth reaped by others?

What do these terms mean?

Digital Infrastructure: The foundational ecosystem supporting the digital economy, including data centers, fiber-optic networks, and telecommunications towers, attracting most AI investments in Southeast Asia.

Structural Competitiveness: An economy's ability to compete sustainably in a specific sector, built on R&D and workforce development rather than merely attracting foreign investment.

Data Centers: Massive facilities hosting servers that power AI applications and cloud computing, consuming vast amounts of electricity and water for cooling.
